Busy being busy?

How are you?

"Busy"

I recently read a blog from Tiana Wilson-Buys of Talking Business about how “Busyness” is the new status symbol. You can read the full blog here
But the gist of it is that even just 20 years ago people would use flash belongings such as cars, mobile phones or swanky holidays as status symbols, however now that they are all far easier to come by, people are using their time, or lack of it, as a measure of their success.

This blog got me thinking. If everyone is so busy how come all these small businesses aren’t making a fortune and growing at a rate of knots?

My conclusion on that one is that a lot of people are busy being busy, but not necessarily busy doing productive tasks which will generate income, grow business and bring in the clients. So many people seem to run around like headless chickens trying to get everything done and, in some cases, wasting time taking far longer than necessary doing the jobs they really hate doing. If you don’t enjoy something you can guarantee that you will put it off and then drag it out when you do get around to it.  Irrespective of what type of business you are running, if you are trying to do it all then you will not be able to achieve as much as if you outsource or bring in experts. By freeing up some of the time you would have spent dealing with time consuming tasks or the jobs you really don’t enjoy doing, you can generate more hours in your day – what you do with them is up to you!

Time tracking…
I find keeping a log of time throughout the day helps me to see where my time is being spent, I can then assess whether that is the most productive way to work or not. You may be surprised as to where you are spending your time. There are a number of free websites and apps which also help track where you are spending your time online – have a look at https://www.rescuetime.com/ which has a forever free option and will give you daily reports to see what your biggest time wasters are.

If you are busy being busy and wonder what you could do to help generate more time, maybe it is a good opportunity to look at outsourcing those admin tasks which keep zapping your energy.
